This workshop will explore the writing of creative non-fiction, with a focus on history and biography. Reconstructing past lives and past events is a craft which at its best not only discovers facts and interprets them, but also organises them into the kind of compelling narrative which publishers love and readers can’t put down. While we’ll be looking at some of the theory behind creative non-fiction, the workshops start from the premise that the best reason to write is to be read; and the emphasis is firmly on the practical side. Topics will include research methods and resources in the digital age; truth, authenticity and creativity; and producing a proposal that a publisher can’t turn down. Participants will be expected to do some writing, some thinking and some talking. But not necessarily in that order.
Adrian Tinniswood is the author of a dozen books on social and architectural history, including Pirates of Barbary, His Invention So Fertile: A Life of Christopher Wren, and The Verneys, which was shortlisted for the BBC/Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction. He lives in a quiet village outside Bath with his partner Helen and a comfort of cats.
